Driving the Outback: Katherine to Tenant Creek (Photos only)

Notes & photos only; more narrative to come

After checking oil and water levels, began the XXX km drive down Stuart Highway (aka Carrion Highway) from Katherine to Tenant Creek. Saw lots of dead marsupials and dingos being picked over by Black and Whistling Kites and, as we were later to find out, Wedge-Tailed Eagles.

The outback was full of surprises

Stopped at kitchy outback café at Daly Water for lunch of Barramundi (a wrap and burger). By arrangement with the proprietors, tour groups were making their own lunches---a phenomenon we were to observe throughout the Outback.

Spotted an Austalian Bustard near the side of the road, which took flight when it spotted us. A magnificent bird.

Saw our first wild Emu (near Renner Springs).

Encountered scary-looking dust devils, called Whirlywigs (sp?), by Australians.

Made sure we had plenty of gas and water, but it turned out that the distances between outback stops (gas, toilet, food & drink) were much shorter than we thought----generally less than XXX miles.

An endless straight road... filled with the unexpected...

Arrived Tenant Creek
